With humor and a number of stories, Matt weaves together a variety of mountain music for a program that is rooted and relevant

The Lone Prairie Band
(Matt Brown, Paul Brown & Beverly Smith)

This trio is featured on Matt's new album, "Lone Prairie." In addition to Matt's fiddle tunes, this group performs a number of songs from Paul's mother, who learned them in the 1920s and 1930s from older musicians near Bedford , Virginia . Paul's unique repertoire is augmented by the songs and tunes he learned from spending time with musicians like Fields Ward and Tommy Jarrell. Beverly 's rich voice can be heard on the CD, and her repertoire ranges from Carter Family songs and Child ballads to honky-tonk heart-wrenchers.

Paul Brown is a skilled performer of old-time southern fiddle and banjo music with a collection of wonderful songs and tunes from North Carolina and Virginia . He studied banjo intensively with Tommy Jarrell, and has played with a long list of outstanding old time musicians young and old, from Andy Cahan and Mike Seeger in the Bent Mountain Band to Benton Flippen and the Smokey Valley Boys. One of the most respected guitar players in old time music today, Beverly Smith is also in demand as a singer, fiddler, and dance caller. She has made numerous recordings, backing up fiddlers Bruce Molsky, Rafe Stefanini, Tara Nevins and Brad Leftwich, vocalizing with Irish musicians Mick Moloney and John Doyle, and singing with bluegrass great Laurie Lewis.

The Brown Brothers - Matt Brown & Paul Brown

The Brown Brothers is a rowdy duo featuring Paul's occasionally raucous songs and always innovative banjo playing.  He's likely to lead some on the fiddle as well as finger-pick the guitar for some soul-searching blues.  Paul's repertoire is a conglomeration of songs learned from his mother, Fields Ward, Tommy Jarrell and tunes from Luther Davis, Benton Flippen, and Robert Sykes.  These two can switch from a toe-tapping Round Peak song to a quirky Kentucky fiddle tune faster than you can say "Kyle Creed."

As noted above, Paul Brown is a skilled performer of old-time southern fiddle and banjo music with a collection of wonderful songs and tunes from North Carolina and Virginia.  He studied banjo intensively with Tommy Jarrell, and has played with a long list of outstanding old time musicians young and old, from Andy Cahan and Mike Seeger in the Bent Mountain Band to Benton Flippen and the Smokey Valley Boys.
